SEDATION DENTISTRY - General Sedation by an Anesthesiologist
Not very many people actively enjoy visiting the dentist. This doesn’t really hurt our feelings – we understand. Who wants to spend an afternoon with people poking around in your mouth? While dentistry is useful and necessary in order to keep a clean and healthy smile, there’s no doubt about it that most people would rather be doing other things. It’s just like any sort of routine maintenance work that you’d do with a machine – maybe you’d rather be driving the car, but it’s very important to get the oil changed.
However, there are many people who don’t just dislike the dentist – it causes them severe anxiety. Many people even have very active gag reflexes that act up whenever they head to the dentist and this can prevent them from getting the dental care they need. Also, anything that causes somebody severe anxiety will likely preclude them from seeking out that activity. Even if that activity is getting your teeth cleaned and taken care of – and we like to do all that we can to ensure that not only do we provide quality dental care, but also that our customers have as pain free and relaxing of an experience as possible.
If you are one of the many who experience severe anxiety or gag reflex when you go to the dentist, general sedation may be for you. In general, general sedation refers to a stronger level of sedatives as compared to those offered by traditional oral or gas methods of sedation. For those who experience severe anxiety, stronger sedation methods can be used to help you relax and get through necessary dental procedures with as little fear as possible. Being sedated doesn’t have to be expensive or dangerous – many insurances cover the cost of sedation should it be recommended by a dentist and if the anesthesiologist is well trained, there is little to no pain involved in the process of sedation and it is not dangerous.
